International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. It was originally called "International Day of Disabled Persons" until 2007. Each year the day focuses on a different issue.
Geego chats with Dj Kabila on International of Persons with Disabilities.
Who is Kabila ?
Kabila is born Siyanda Makanya, born in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, grew up liking to dance like any other kid in the location. Music came as a natural as was always surrounded by friends who where spinners themselves.
Kabila is known for Deep House music , such as Somnyama what inspired you to be a Deep House musician?
When i started music in 1999,we will watch people like vinny davinci and christos spin, from their compilation, the sound they carried got stuck with coz it touched the soul part of my consciousness and the rhythm and groove it carried gave me joy, that the fundamental and the foundation of what makes my sound.
What inspired music will save the day ?
Music will save the day was inspired music itself, having to travel for the 1st time in miami and seeing miami music conference and the parties happening there, i myself wanted something that will make a meaning and take the party level of my sound to a different zone. As o always did my birthday parties, i then said let me create something that will leave beyond djkabila existance and the brand was born to develop artist, create a word class event and an apparel line that talks to all the people who love music.
Being a Dj that lives with disability does that disadvantage you if yes who helps you to overcome your challenges ?
There are countless disadvantages being a dj with disability but in my mind the only thing I will see was just becoming a success in what I do and I just had to work beyond what you see a guy on the wheelchair to become the best DJ to ever spin the music and making, I think that is what made you know the dj Kabila brand. Things like accessibility still the biggest challage and having booked to a hotel that can not accomodate you but management as I grow and friends helped beat those odds and they are there to help in few places where I cannot manuever.
After your car accident that happens in 1999 what changes from your normal to now ?
Lol jumping up and down and crosing a railway station with my legs, maybe but to be honest I think I changed for the better as it grew me to have a purpose in life and even help people like me through programmes like beyond disability which is a non-profit org that is a voice for people with disabilities.
Did government did means of supporting you ?
Nothing as yet that has come from the government in terms of any support but the doors are still open if anyone is still want to support my initiative of helping youth through music and disability initiatives I try.
Do you need any changes to be made here in the workplace?
Accesibility is the key, make places more accessible and that will help more people not just for me as an artist with disability,Theres a lot to be done interms of accessibility and acccomodating people like me with disability, we all a human beings that want to enjoy life which is the line of work ive chosen. I hope venues can consider making venues more friends and reserve parking so it can be easy for anyone with disabilities who also would love to have some fun.
Have you got ideas about good ways to do your job?
Give us more platforms to show case our ability, disability is not inability,
Do you have ideas for making your workplace safe?
Disability is everywhere, anyone can be affected by it so making places more friendly will help the society and will decrease even frustration for people living with disabilities know that they are also taken care of and that they are also part of the society.
What must we expect from Dj Kabila in 2021?
Dj kabila is currently in studio working on his 4th studio album that will be released in march the 5th and planning more events and working towards launching his apparel range to be accessible all over SA. I hope we do something with beyond disability that will be of help for people like me who live with disability.
